The 2009 Fullerton Beautiful Garden Tour will be held on

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

11am to 4pm

The self-guided tour begins at the Fullerton College Horticulture Department. The entrance is on Berkeley Avenue, east of Lemon Street.

Cost of map is $10. Members of Fullerton Beautiful will receive a map for free, so please recognize yourself at registration.

The Fullerton College Horticulture will also be hosting a plant sale.
Plants maybe left for safe-keeping while you attend the garden tour.

Garden Tour 2007- THE INMAN GARDEN

Described by Lorraine as “Heinz 57” she and Sam have done an evolutionary makeover on their landscaping. This home first caught the eye of Fullerton Beautiful as a “Front Yard Award Winner” in October 2006. Upon being invited into the back yard, the committee encouraged them to join the 2007 garden tour. This project evolved over 30 years with only a camellia and Spot of Gold remaining. Seeking inspiration from former garden tours and the desire to return to California friendly plantings, the Inmans have created a “no lawn” front yard with attractive hardscape and a shaded, tropical look in the back yard and patio area.

Garden Tour 2007- THE BURKE GARDEN

The Burkes moved into their 1940s vintage home in 1977. Shaping their garden with a natural look and an English cottage garden style has brought them great pleasure.. A myriad of garden art adds to the interest, along with an abundance of rocks collected from various excursions. The garden is multilevel, with an aviary, secret garden and koi pond with a water fall which can be heard from the various seating areas. A gazebo gives respite from the sun, and the fireplace adds warmth when needed. The trees came by their own accord, housing a variety of birds.

Garden Tour 2007- THE DRIGGERS/COLLIER GARDEN

The naturalist garden displays California natives, over 20 ornamental grasses ranging from six inches to eight feet, and a koi pond with stream. The front yard is edged by the original jacaranda tree and bird of paradise. Five years ago everything else was replaced with low maintenance, drought tolerant natives and Mediterranean plants. The side garden introduces the visitor to tuldoides and Alphonse Karr bamboo, ornamental grasses, and self-seeding annuals. The patio garden features ferns and begonias against a jacaranda blue wall. Step to the pond and look for koi and fancy goldfish, stroll around the grassy path through the meadow to examine the various ornamental grasses up close, sit and listen to the birds. The meadow is in its infancy – yet you will see approximately 20 types of grasses sprinkled with wildflowers and perennials.

Garden Tour 2007- THE SHIRK GARDEN

This charming unsophisticated garden is entered through an arbor of gnarled wisteria plants, one of which may have been planted when the California bungalow was new, circa 1918. Different elements were added by original owners with retaining walls of broken concrete, 99% of which came from a previous driveway and garage pad. Current owner Brydon Shirk says that the walls are “completely demountable on an energetic whim, and they have been.” The garden is peaceful with a chime tower and koi pond fed by a babbling stream. There are many places to sit, rest or entertain friends and family. On the horizon - a retirement project to build a labyrinth on the side bank.

Garden Tour 2007- THE FLORY GARDEN

After building their home in 1975, Bill and Jan eyed the vacant lot next door for the next 29 years. An innovative landscape artist dealt with a nasty drainage problem in the summer of 2004. The result has them wondering what took them so long. Birds and bunnies abound in a garden that features native grasses, a rose garden, vegetable boxes and an orchard of old and new stock. Look for other creatures as you stroll along meandering paths leading to the grapevine-covered arbor. A “wind chime” tree and burbling water softly announce that all is well in this garden for the soul.

You’re welcomed by a charming cottage garden with angel face roses beckoning you into a profusion of old fashioned flowers including hydrangea, Watsonia and Virginia stock. Follow the meandering walkways to a soothing pond. Ten years in the making, ever-handy Woody has made Marti’s garden dreams come true with the addition of bird houses, a potting shed and picket fences throughout.

Garden Tour 2007- THE CAPUNE GARDEN

“It’s just for fun” best describes the eclectic mix of motifs facetiously called Club Skyline by the Capunes. Featuring seven levels on about an acre, the property provides a Cactus Court, Fountain Terrace, Spa Deck, Sports Court, Meditation Terrace with a Pool Pad and a maintenance area with a large dog run – all designed and constructed by the owner starting 30 years ago. An added attraction – Garrett and Harmeet display their 8-vehicle British car collection on the circle driveway. Caution: small children should stay with parents, please.

Garden Tour 2007- THE HELFMAN GARDEN

Eleven very old pepper trees encircle this English Tudor style home. Inspiration for the front yard came from a swan topiary with the garden designed around it. Can you tell her favorite flower – hydrangeas? Other plants provide year-round texture and color. Head to the back and you have a haven for relaxing and entertaining. Cast your eye further and you will see a great canyon view from a sunken patio.

Garden Tour 2007 - THE MCDANIEL GARDEN

Purchased from the original owners in 1967, the McDaniels have collaborated on a combination of tropical plants and flowers. It’s the perfect his and hers garden: Don at one time consulted in tropical landscaping and Joann has the passion for flowers. A colorful bonus is the handcrafted and painted garden furniture accenting the garden area. Throw in an exceptional city view and the McDaniels have it all in their own backyard.
